King’s Somborne C of E Art and Design & Technology Intent
“Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.” Quentin Blake, Children’s Laureate
Our Art and D&T intent is to ensure we fulfil our children’s entitlement to a rich and explorative creative curriculum. Our young artists and designers will enjoy developing their skills in painting, printing, drawing, sculpture and textiles, design and construction.
We are inspired not only by famous artists and movements, but also our picturesque surrounding environment. We will also provide opportunities for our children to learn about local artists and gain invaluable insight from our artist visits.
In order to implement our curriculum, we inspire interest and curiosity about Art and Design through a series of lessons offering clear skills and knowledge progression. Our children will explore techniques, different equipment, mechanisms and models. They will design, make and evaluate pieces and gain a technical understanding of the processes.
We ensure that a variety of materials and medium are incorporated into art lessons according to the Progression documents. Children use oil pastels, chalk, clay, watercolours, dyes as well as less familiar resources such as gold leaf, craft wire and Modroc. This encourages children's curiosity and confidence and allows a broad experience of what the subjects can entail. Children also have ample opportunity throughout the school year to express their creativiy by performing in shows such as the Christmas Nativity, Easter services and the Year 5/6 end of year production.. By offering opportunities to explore a breadth of media, children are exposed to endless combinations to express their creative selves.
The impact of our curriculum in Art and D&T will be evident in the children's progression of skills and experiences, as per our progression documents. Children feel able to talk about their learning in Art and D&T and recognise positive experiences that have enabled them to develop their creative selves.
Our curriculum inspires curiosity, enables our children to aspire for more, and supports them in becoming resilient learners.
The whole school created these fantastic stained glass effect poppies for Remembrance Day.

Thank you so much to our volunteer parents for sharing their creative professions with us during ' Crafty Parents Week' . We were all so interested in finding out about the many varied careers that require some creative thinking and talent. A great inspiration to all of the children, and staff, who were able to visit the workshops. Here are some of the photo's!
Collaborative Whole School Art and Design.
We really value the importance of creative subjects and learning at King's Somborne CE Primary. Our children have been involved in several whole school Art projects including a Printmaking week. Each class had the opportunity to explore a different process and created some superb artworks, each with a story about it's creation.
Here are a few photographs taken during the art lessons , including when Mr Sparrow reversed his car over Eagle's collagraphs!
