At King's Somborne C of E Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to lead, serve and make a positive difference. Leadership is not reserved for a small number of pupils; rather, it is developed progressively throughout a child's journey with us. We provide a wide range of meaningful leadership opportunities that help children grow in confidence, responsibility, compassion and service to others.

As a Church school, our approach to leadership is rooted in our Christian values and our belief that every child is uniquely created in God's image. We encourage pupils to use their talents to serve others, contribute to their community and become agents of positive change locally, nationally and globally.

Leading Worship and Church Services

All pupils are given opportunities to take leadership roles in worship and celebration. Every class contributes to church services throughout the year, helping to plan, lead and participate in acts of collective worship. Pupils read prayers and scripture, share reflections and perform music and drama, developing confidence while strengthening links between school, church and community.

Children also play leading roles in productions, performances and special celebrations, enabling them to communicate messages, inspire others and develop valuable public speaking skills.

Worship Leaders

Our Worship Leaders work alongside staff to shape and enhance collective worship across the school. They gather pupil views, contribute ideas, lead elements of worship and support reflection opportunities for their peers. Through this role, pupils learn how to influence positive change and serve their school community.

Wellbeing Council

Members of the Wellbeing Council are democratically elected by their peers, reflecting the British Value of democracy. Representatives meet regularly throughout the year to discuss ideas, gather pupil voice and explore ways to improve school life for everyone.

The council considers issues relating to wellbeing, inclusion and school improvement, encouraging children to recognise that they can make a difference not only within school but also in the wider world. Through discussion, debate and decision-making, pupils develop an understanding of democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of others.

House Captains

House Captains are selected by staff in recognition of their embodiment of our Christian values and their commitment to serving others. They act as role models, support younger pupils, lead house events and encourage participation across the school community.

Through their leadership, House Captains demonstrate responsibility, service and integrity, helping to foster a sense of belonging and collective achievement.

Play Leaders

Play Leaders play an important role in ensuring lunchtimes are enjoyable, inclusive and active for all children. They organise games, encourage participation and support younger or more vulnerable pupils to feel included.

This role develops empathy, communication and responsibility whilst helping to create a positive and nurturing play environment.

Climate Club

Our Climate Club members volunteer their own lunchtime to help make our school and community more sustainable. Driven by a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, pupils monitor classroom practices, provide feedback to staff, undertake litter-picking activities and meet with school leaders, including the Site Manager and Headteacher, to discuss environmental improvements.

Their work helps pupils understand the importance of responsible citizenship and inspires them to take practical action in caring for God's world. Through this work, children learn that even small actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Supporting Younger Pupils

Many of our leadership opportunities involve working alongside younger children. Whether acting as reading partners, supporting worship, organising activities, mentoring younger pupils or helping peers on the playground, our children learn that leadership is fundamentally about service to others.

These opportunities help to build confidence, empathy and positive relationships across year groups whilst creating a strong sense of community.

Courageous Advocacy and Community Action

We encourage all pupils to become courageous advocates who recognise injustice and seek ways to make a positive difference. Children regularly engage in fundraising, awareness campaigns and charitable initiatives that support local, national and international causes.

Examples include our Walk for Refugees, which raised hundreds of pounds to support displaced people, and learning experiences linked to themes of welcome, belonging and social justice such as our school Nativity, Refuge. Through these experiences, pupils learn that their voices and actions can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Preparing Children for the Future

Through our wide range of leadership opportunities, pupils develop the skills, attitudes and values that will help them flourish both now and in the future. They learn how to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, take responsibility, listen to different viewpoints and contribute positively to society.

Our aim is that every child leaves King's Somborne as a confident learner, compassionate leader and responsible citizen who understands their ability to make the world a better place.
